Spoken English Tutorials Plural Of You
This is AJ Hoge from Effortless English program. Llet’s talk about the English language a little bit. Something very very simple which you may have learned the textbook but maybe not maybe you didn’t learn this in school.
What is the plural form of you?
If I say “i like you”, one person i’m talking one person and i say “i like you”. But if there are five people and i want to say the same thing “i like you” well of course you know that the proper grammatical way, to say that is to use the same word, to say “you”.
You is singular and plural as they say the grammar books. But in the real world spoken English, that’s actually not what we say at all. And it depends on which part of the country or the world you’re from. I’m from the united states. So in the United States we have two common ways to say “you” meaning more than one, plural.
Now one is YOU GUYS. So you say “I like you guys”. Now people they get all upset about this sometime expecially does british grammar people. Oh “you guys” is not correct. Well it doesn’t matter. It is correct. Because it’s used by the majority of people certainly in the United States. So it’s correct American English whether you like it or not. Doesn’t matter. And you need to know this.
And you guys, can be used for with women or man. You know “guy” (the word guy) by itself means a man. But we’re talking about groups, we say “you guys”. Hey you guys let’s go to the movies. you’re talking to four friends. And you wanna say you to all of them. You might say: “Hey you guys, do you want to go to a movie?”
It is perfectly correct and acceptable in spoken English. And infact very very common. Now this form of “you”, (you guys) for more than one, it’s common and expecially in the north part of the United States and in the western part of the United States.
Now in the southern part of the United States, especially the southeast of United States, many people say YOU ALL. so there’s you for one person. But for many people we say “you all”. Or we wanna make it shortly say Y’ALL. Watch below video to learn more about plural of You.
